Interview with Sam Hollander

He’s 50% of the songwriting/ production team S*A*M* & SLUGGO but he’s 100% The Hollander. Co-writing & producing songs for artists such as Katy Perry, Train, Boys Like Girls, Gym Class Heroes, Kelly Rowland, Cobra Starship & more …he’s no stranger to the term Certified HIT. I recently had the opportunity to visit with him about his monstrous success as well as his devotion to clearasil. Read On.
Best Makeout Song ever written?
Sister Christian by Night Ranger. If there’s motorin’ involved… I’m always way in.
Favorite Shoes or Bare Feet?
I went through a tremendous New Balance phase, but I’ve shifted back
into the Nike realm. Bare feet… Not a good look for me. I’m modest.
Electric slide or The Sprinkler?
Electric Slide creeps me out. It’s the wedding killer. I’m always down to do the sprinkler in private.
Road Dog or Jet Hog??
Boss Hog
NYC or LA Baby?
I bleed Yankee. When Sushi and Tacos enter the discussion… I’m Randy Newman.
You’re the co-writer, Freshmaka of all things HIP Mr. Hollander. Were you born to be HIP?
Isn’t HIP a health insurance plan? I’d like to believe I was covered at birth.
Where does the Hollander find his inspiration?
Every morning is Groundhog Day. I wake up and stare at a pimply 16 year old dork in the mirror. That being said, I’ve cut back on the Clearasil.
Gold Records…Rolling Stone Producer HOT LIST Producer of the year .. Hits Hits Hits. Did you ever imagine you would be writing the songs that make the young girls cry?
I certainly imagined it, but those dreams were usually rudely interrupted by someone jumping out of the bushes with a camera screaming “You’ve been Punk’d”
From the early days, remixing hits for DMX, Method Man & Master P to writing & producing for bands such as Boys Like Girls & Gym Class Heroes, has the journey been what you expected? And is POP the place you call home?
Home is where the heart is. Pop (which for me includes anything with a guitar) is definitely the artery. As far as my journey, it has been everything I hoped and more. I got lost many times along the way.
I’m very lucky that I made it out.
Katy Perry “If you can Afford me” Is one of my favorite KP songs. And, Well you’re definitely the “Creme’ de la Crop” How do you choose your projects & what musically motivates you into action?
& Lastly, what’s on the 2010 plate for The Hollander?
“Creme’ de la Crop” … That was Katy. She wins. I always dug that. Honestly as a unit, we take gigs on instinct and instinct alone. We make a concerted effort to avoid chasing what all the other kids are going after in the sandbox.
The bulk of our hits have come from our own Bad News Bears-like crew, so it helps us follow our inner A&R sense.
2010… More sand… More sangria… When I wake up, hoping to see Plastic Parachute on Regis and Kelly as the morning coffee battles the previous night’s toxins. God Bless You Birdee Bow.
And Thank YOU SAM Hollander I’ll peep you through a hungover tv screen soon :)
