Interview with Ricky Sans of MELEE

Rock band MELEE is burning up the iTunes chart with their latest album, The Masquerade & although I’ve been a fan for many years, I am rediscovering just why I fell in love with this band in the first place. MELEE has a way of sinking a pop hook deeply into your being…so deep in fact that you may wakeup dancing your way out of a MELEE dreamstate in the mornings. Not a bad way to start your day. Don’t believe me? Take a listen to the infectious GIRLS WANNA ROCK & just remember I warned you. Having recently returned from a Japan tour & in the midst of a busy Release schedule, I managed to steal a few minutes away with guitarist Ricky Sans. Read on to find out why LOVE really is transcending & why rainbow sandals just landed on your Fall Fashion “must haves” shopping list….

New Melee album, The Masquerade, is BURNING up the iTunes Charts since it’s release this week. Where did you record the new album & how was the overall process different from Melee albums gone by?
We recorded this album all over the place. Mainly in LA and OC, ca. This album was a Completely different process than our past two albums. We worked with several producers, rather than just one producer. We wanted to branch out, and experiment with our sound, and learn from other creative people as well. I don’t understand the point in working with one producer anymore. It’s so limiting. I love collaborating with people.
Tell us about The Ballad of You & I and why it’s our new favorite Love Song of all time…
haha, well, interestingly enough, it was the title of a song we had written years ago. the only thing good about the song was the title, so it always remained in the back of my head. When we were writing the song, it became clear that the title had found a home. We wanted to write a song about love transcending a material and tangible world. Love isn’t something that happens, it’s something that exists at all times.
We all know Melee is a band filled with phenomenal talent & songwriting skill, but your live performances really seal the deal. How has the LIVE show evolved with the latest material?
I feel that the music we have on this album lends itself to birth a much more energetic rock show. We wanted to fuse a club element with a rock band. So hopefully it feels like you’re at a club playing some awesome rock/dance mashups haha.
Where can we get more of our Melee FIX in the next few months?
we’re releasing a 3d melee movie.
Thanks Ricky
